Scholarship Service and South Brunswick High School Helped a Local Athlete Secure a Full-Ride Cross Country/Track Scholarship

Jennifer Ordonez, the wife of Player’s Club chef Augusto Ordonez, is a social worker at South Brunswick High School in Southport, N.C. Ms. Ordonez is the founder of a program called First Generation College Student Mentor Program at South Brunswick High School. The initiative has been successful in helping to ensure that hard-working first-generation students have equal opportunity to attend college. It also makes sure these students receive the help they need to navigate the process.

As a result of the collaboration between Grecco and Ordonez, Jaxson Hudson received a cross country/track scholarship to Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C.

Because many do not have a parent at home who understands the process, first-generation college-bound students can be at a disadvantage as they go through the application process and pursue financial aid and scholarships.

Ordonez contacted Saint James resident Pat Grecco, president and founder of College Bound Athlete Scholarship Service to help a graduating senior named Jaxson Hudson. Grecco has been working with college-bound students in all sports for 30 years. What sets her apart is her ability to find the right school for each student she works with, as well as help pay for tuition, room and board.

As a result of the collaboration between Grecco and Ordonez, Hudson received a cross country/track scholarship to Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C. Hudson is a gifted athlete with the potential to be a successful runner at the collegiate level. Like many college students, he aspired to go to college but needed additional support and guidance to complete his applications, as well as to reach out and network with college coaches.

Grecco worked pro bono to help Hudson narrow his college choices with a plan to major in criminal justice and compete in a collegiate cross country/ track program.

Grecco and Ordonez had the opportunity to attend the signing of the National Letter of Intent at South Brunswick High School in May 2019.

The First Generation College Student Mentor Program continues to identify seniors that are a good match for the program guide, support them through the college application process, and help them seek financial aid and athletic/academic scholarships.
