Education is important to Cam and he takes pride in finishing what he starts. “I made a promise to my mother that I would get my degree, and I did. Learning is a life fundamental that is very important to me,” Cam says. “The amazing thing about education is that you expand your ideas, and impossible ideas become achievable accomplishments.”
Cam took classes at Auburn and he completed his degree in sociology before signing his contract extension in 2015. Cam was elated to have finished his education.
“It just gives me so many chills. I’m Cam Newton, graduate of Auburn University, one of the best colleges in the nation,” he says.
Cam admits the road to finishing his college degree was not always easy. There were times when he questioned why as a multi-million-dollar quarter- back he was getting up for an 8 a.m. class. He wanted to blend in as much as a 6-foot, 5-inch, 245-pound NFL quarterback could. Going to school was kind of like living a double life.
“Those tests were brutal for me,” Cam laughs. “People see this figure on TV and it’s like, ‘Well, he’s Superman. He’s this. He’s that. He can handle it.’ But yet, the reality of it is, is that I’m normal as you are. I get nervous. I get chills. I get anxious in different situations.”
But of course, as challenging as it all was, Cam admits going on campus and taking classes to earn his degree was worth it. “My instructors, as well as the other students, did an unbelievable job with making me comfortable over time,” he says.
When Cam one day hangs up his football helmet, he wants to use his degree to open up a day care. But his fans shouldn’t have to worry about that happening anytime soon. In the meantime, as Cam continues to dominate the grid-iron, fans can continue to look forward to this No. 1 quarterback making awesome moves on the field.
THE CAM NEWTON FOUNDATION is committed to enhancing the lives of
youth by addressing their educational, physical and social needs. The foundation is dedicated to the communities of Charlotte and Atlanta, and works collaboratively with groups and organizations in those regions to make a positive impact in youth education, physical fitness and health, and community service.
Under the umbrella of an initiative called Every 1 Matters, the Foundation focuses on three charitable programs:
Every 1 Learns focuses on providing academic support and aid for academically talented or motivated youth who are lacking financial resources, as well as providing mentoring and tutoring programs for all students, including those considered at risk.
Every 1 Plays uses play as a way to reach young people and teach these important life skills. The program seeks to improve and revitalize underserved communities by refurbishing neighborhood parks, fields, playgrounds and community centers. Resources are also provided for kids who cannot afford to be involved in sports and recreation.
And through Every 1 Gives, the Foundation emphasizes and encourages volunteerism, develops impactful and significant holiday outreach programs that brighten the spirits of those in need, and helps support and participate in other non-profit initiatives.
